Wes Barnes Defeats Bellator Vet Joe Elmore at NFC 86 in Hard Fought Scrap

In regional MMA news, NFC returned once again to CenterStage Atlanta for NFC 86 and put on another entertaining show featuring a mixed bag of amateur and pro kickboxing and mixed martial arts fighting competition. The co-main event featured Savannah, GA’s Wes Barnes (4-2) facing off against Bellator veteran Joe Elmore (13-8) in a hard-fought scrap. The fight was Barnes’s sixth as a pro and his first in the lightweight division.

Elmore opened the fight with a flying knee and took control of the fight early. He landed some clean combinations and got Barnes down to the canvas twice in the opening round, but he was unable to maintain control. Barnes began to find his rhythm late in the first as he began putting together some nice combinations ending with stiff body kicks and knees. He carried this offense into the second and kept Elmore against the cage and at range with long jabs and teeps fired up the middle. Elmore came out swinging in the third and landed some of the hardest looking shots of the fight, but Barnes maintained distance and continued to vary his offense and connected more frequently.

All three judges scored the fight 29-28 with the unanimous decision going to Barnes. With the win, Barnes improves to 4-2 overall and 1-0 as a lightweight. Elmore drops to 13-8 and is 1-1 so far in 2016.
