Werdum set to defend title against Miocic at stadium event in Brazil

Stipe Miocic is set to take on heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum on May 14 in Curitiba, Brazil, the UFC announced today.

This event marks the fourth ever stadium event held by the UFC and will also be the UFC’s first time in Curitiba. The fight will take place at the Arena da Baixada soccer stadium which holds just over 42,000 seats.

The card, which was previously marketed as UFC Fight Night 88, will now be a pay-per-view event called UFC 198. Vitor Belfort and Jacare Souza were initially expected to headline the ‘Fight Night’ card but will now be the co-main event of UFC 198 instead.

Fabricio Werdum (20-5-1) was expected to defend his title against Cain Velasquez at UFC 196, however, complications involving injuries arose just two weeks out of the fight leading to the cancellation of the bout. Werdum is currently on a 6-fight win streak with his last win being a submission victory over Cain Velasquez in Mexico to unify the heavyweight title.

Stipe Miocic (14-2), who was promised a title shot following his victory at UFC 195, has won 5 of his last 6 bouts. His only recent loss came at the hands of former champion Junior Dos Santos in a close fight that was nominated for Fight of the Year. After that, Miocic went on to score a dominant TKO over Mark Hunt followed by a 54-second knockout of Andrei Arlovski.
