Werdum vs Rothwell announced for UFC 203 in Cleveland

The UFC has added a second heavyweight bout to its debut event in Cleveland.

Former heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum is set to face #5 ranked Ben Rothwell at UFC 203, as announced during Sunday’s UFC Fight Night 88 broadcast. The card will be headlined by a title fight between recently crowned heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic and Alistair Overeem.

Werdum (20-6-1) lost his heavyweight title earlier this month when he was knocked out by Miocic in the opening round of their UFC 198 main event bout in front of the Brazilian crowd. The loss snapped Werdum’s six-fight win streak which consisted of four finishes, including his third-round guillotine win over Cain Velasquez at UFC 188 to win the belt. Prior to that, Werdum beat Mark Hunt with a flying-knee knockout after a slow start to earn the interim heavyweight title.

Also coming off of a loss is Ben Rothwell (36-10) whose four-fight finish streak was stopped by former champion Junior Dos Santos in their five-round main event bout at UFC Fight Night 86. Rothwell dropped a unanimous decision after having difficulty landing shots on the evasive Dos Santos who managed to stay out of range with his crafty footwork. “Big Ben” entered that bout coming off of impressive back-to-back submission wins over Josh Barnett and Matt Mitrione.

UFC 203 will take place in Cleveland, Ohio on September 10 at the Quicken Loans Arena. No other bouts have been announced for the card so far.
