Former UFC light-heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort will take on #2 ranked middleweight contender Ronaldo Souza in the main event of UFC Fight Night 87.
Vitor Belfort (25-11) is the only fighter in the UFC who holds a win over current middleweight champion Luke Rockhold. Since losing his light-heavyweight title to Randy Couture in 2004, Belfort has had 3 unsuccessful shots at UFC gold, most recently a TKO loss to then-champion Chris Weidman. Belfort, who is now 38, earned that title shot by going on an incredible 3-fight win streak, scoring headkick knockouts over Michael Bisping, Luke Rockhold, and Dan Henderson. ‘The Phenom’ believes that he can make a definite case for a title shot with a win over fellow Brazilian ‘Jacare’ Souza.
Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza (22-4, 1 NC), one of the very best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black-belts in MMA today, has had a successful career in both Strikeforce and the UFC. Prior to his controversial split-decision loss to Yoel Romero at UFC 194, Jacare was riding an 8-fight win streak with 7 of those wins coming by way of stoppage. The former Strikeforce middleweight champion has made his case several times for a title shot in the UFC and has yet to be awarded one.
With Yoel Romero on the sidelines due to a potential PED violation and former champion Chris Weidman insisting on a rematch with Rockhold, this fight between Belfort and ‘Jacare’ appears to be a clear #1 contender bout with a shot at the title on the line.
UFC Fight Night 87 will take place on May 14 in Brazil. The specific city of where the event will be held has yet to be announced.
