Velasquez vs Werdum II set for UFC 207, Cruz vs Garbrandt in the works

Some major additions have been made to UFC 207.

Former heavyweight champions Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum are set to rematch on the card, the UFC announced on Thursday. In addition, a report by MMAFighting.com has revealed that a bantamweight title fight between champion Dominick Cruz and #6 ranked Cody Garbrandt is currently in the works.

Velasquez and Werdum first met at UFC 188 in Mexico City where Werdum submitted Velasquez with a third-round guillotine to win the heavyweight belt. They were originally scheduled to rematch in the main event of UFC 196 in March but both fighters were forced off the card with injuries.

After beating the two-time champ, Werdum (21-6-1) faced Stipe Miocic in his first title defense at UFC 198 where he was knocked out in the first round. He came back with a unanimous decision over Travis Browne in a rematch at UFC 203 in September.

Velasquez (14-2) also faced Travis Browne after losing his belt and won the fight with a Performance of the Night worthy first-round knockout at UFC 200. He entered that fight after having gone through a year-long layoff due to a back injury.

Garbrandt (10-0) has been pretty vocal about getting a title shot since knocking out Takeya Mizugaki in 48 seconds at UFC 202. The Team Alpha Male product is a perfect 5-0 in the UFC with four of those wins coming by way of knockout. Cruz (22-1) is coming off of a unanimous decision win over long-time rival Urijah Faber in their rubber match at UFC 199 in June. Prior to that, he beat TJ Dillashaw to win back the bantamweight belt following his layoff due to knee injuries.

UFC 207 takes place on December 30 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and will be headlined by Ronda Rousey’s return against bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes.
