Valerie Letourneau vs Joanne Calderwood set for first-ever UFC women’s flyweight bout

Valerie Letourneau is scheduled to face Joanne Calderwood in the first-ever UFC women’s bout to be held 125 pounds.

The UFC has noted that this is not the introduction of a new division to the roster, but that we can expect to see more women’s fights at this weight. The bout will take place at UFC Fight Night 89 in Letourneau’s home-province of Quebec, Canada in June.

Letourneau (8-4) recently made an unsuccessful run at the strawweight title, winning three straight bouts to earn a title shot at current champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk. The last of the three bouts was a unanimous decision victory over then-undefeated Maryna Moroz. Letourneau entered the bout against Jędrzejczyk as a heavy underdog and lost via unanimous decision but posed a tougher challenge for the champ than most had expected.

Joanna Calderwood (10-1) has been out of competition since last July. Following her loss to Maryna Moroz in April 2015, Calderwood bounced back by scoring a unanimous decision over Cortney Casey in her home-country of Scotland. Calderwood entered the promotion after making it to the semi-finals on The Ultimate Fighter 20 and made her official debut against professional kickboxer Seo Hee Ham, who she beat via decision.

UFC Fight Night 89 marks the UFC’s debut in Canada’s capital of Ottawa. The event will take place at the TD Place Arena on June 18 and will be headlined by a possible title elimination bout between top welterweight contenders Rory MacDonald and Stephen Thompson.
