Update on Jose Aldo Injury, UFC 189 Title Defense

It’s on! Jose Aldo received medical clearance to compete at UFC 189 after doctors revealed that earlier reports of a fractured rib may have been exaggerated. According to a statement released by the UFC (per ESPN), Aldo only suffered a bruised rib and some cartilage damage.

"In light of recent reports regarding the status of UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo, UFC has received official medical confirmation from several doctors that Aldo did not suffer a broken rib. Following a review of the scans, it has been determined that the champion suffered a bone bruise to his rib and cartilage injury during training,"

UFC officials aren’t taking any chances though. UFC 189 has been heavily marketed internationally. The Nevada State Athletic Commission will perform an independent examination of Aldo before his UFC 189 title fight to determine if he is indeed healthy enough to compete. In a rare move for the company they’ve secured Chad Mendes, number 1 ranked featherweight, as a backup just in case Aldo is forced to withdraw. The fight would be for an interim belt with the winner facing Aldo at a later date this year.
