UFC returns to Manila in October

The UFC will be making its return to the Philippines later this year.

UFC Fight Night Manila is set to take place on October 15 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay, the promotion announced Monday. So far, no bouts have been announced for the card, which will be the second that the UFC has hosted in the Philippines.

The first was UFC Fight Night 66 which was headlined by a featherweight bout between future Hall of Famers Frankie Edgar and Urijah Faber. The five-round bout went to a decision which was scored 50-45 across the board in favor of Edgar. The event also saw Mark Munoz’s retirement bout against Luke Barnatt. “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” dominated the fight before giving an emotional retirement speech and leaving his gloves in the center of the octagon.

The city of Manila has also hosted the iconic “Thrilla in Manila” in 1975 which witnessed the trilogy bout between boxing legends Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. After winning the fight, Ali said that it was the closest he had ever been to dying.
