UFC Fight Night 97 has been cancelled and will be rescheduled at a later time the UFC announced.
The event was expected to take place on October 15 in Pasay City, Philippines and was going to be headlined by BJ Penn vs Ricardo Lamas. It was revealed just days ago that Penn suffered a rib injury in training and was forced out of the bout, leaving Lamas without an opponent and ultimately leading to the cancellation of the card.
The fight would have been Penn’s first since his retirement over two years ago. Lamas, meanwhile, is 1-2 in his last three with his most recent bout being a decision loss to Max Holloway at UFC 199.
According to the statement released by the promotion, all fighters who were scheduled to compete on the card will receive compensation. The UFC plans to reschedule the card sometime next year.
