Top contenders Claudia Gadelha and Karolina Kowalkiewicz met in a pivotal straw-weight bout in the co-main event of UFC 212. Gadelha won the bout by rear-naked choke at 3:03 of the first round.
At the sound of the opening bell, the two women wasted no time in engaging and immediately began exchanging strikes. Kowalkiewicz constantly pressed forward with boxing combinations that forced Gadelha to cover up and retreat. The Brazilian attempted to land kicks from an outside range before initiating a clinch and landing a takedown. She immediately took Kowalkiewicz’s back and sunk in the rear-naked choke.
In her post-fight interview, Gadelha, who has gone on to win two bouts since her loss to Joanna Jedrzejczyk, attributed her recent success to the changes she made with her camp and training.
“You can’t expect the different results if you keep doing the same thing over and over again. I went out and challenged myself and now I’m a new fighter,” she said. “I’m going to be f-cking hard to beat, man.”
