UFC 212 Results: Belfort scores unanimous decision win over Marquardt

MMA veterans Vitor Belfort and Nate Marquardt met in a middleweight bout at UFC 212 in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday night. Belfort won the bout by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).

In the first round, Marquardt quickly tied up Belfort and went for the inside trip, landing in Belfort’s guard. He was unable to posture up and land anything significant since Belfort had his arms tied up but started throwing shoulder strikes before the ref stood them back up. On the feet, Belfort had more success landing strikes and was able to clip Marquardt with a few clean punches.

The second round was a slow-paced, stand-up battle where both men had their moments. After Marquardt was able to land a few shots, Belfort was able to time a counter that momentarily hurt Marquardt and followed up with a head kick and flurry of punches and knees. After recovering from the combo, Marquardt found success landing pot shots from the outside and opened up a small cut above Belfort’s left eye.

The third round was largely a continuation of the second until midway through when Belfort started gaining momentum after landing a head kick. This left Marquardt on retreat as Belfort stalked him down for the rest of the round.

After the fight, Bruce Buffer announced Belfort the winner by unanimous decision. The biggest question now was what was next for Belfort, who had said before the fight that this one could be his last.

“I’ve got five fights left,” he said in his octagon interview after thanking his team and the crowd. “I’m going to reinvent myself and come back different every time.”
