Rising prospects Louis Smolka and Ray Borg met in a flyweight bout to kick off the UFC 207 main card. Borg won the bout via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-26, 30-26).
The first round began with a brief feeling-out process as Borg attempted to close the distance against the taller Smolka. After slipping from an attempted head-kick, Borg managed to get a hold of Smolka and get the fight to the ground where he looked to set up a d’arce choke before transitioning to the back mount. He remained in control of the fight on the ground where he landed several hard shots from side mount, including an elbow which opened up a cut above Smolka’s eye. Towards the end of the round, Borg attempted to lock up an omoplata which Smolka escaped from and used to set up a leg-lock attack of his own. Borg regained control to end the round.
In the second round, Borg closed the distance early and brought Smolka to the ground again. He landed more ground and pound in between scrambles and fended off another leg-lock attempt by Smolka. Later in the round, Borg came close to locking up an arm-triangle choke but instead gave it up and remained in a dominant position on the ground.
The third round began with another takedown by Borg who, again, dominated the fight on the ground. Midway through the round, he came close to finishing the bout with another arm-triangle but Smolka managed to escape. Borg dominated the rest of the fight with his superior grappling in scrambles and on the ground.
“I got the win that’s the most important thing,” said Borg post-fight. “For anybody here that doesn’t know who I am, you know now. You know now.”
