UFC 203 Results: Stipe Miocic knocks out Alistair Overeem in round one to defend title

Stipe Miocic successfully defended his heavyweight title for the first time against Alistair Overeem in the main event of UFC 203.

When the fight started, the champion took control of the cage and began working to establish his range while Overeem circled from the outside throwing feints. Miocic initially struggled to close the distance to get into close boxing range, where he has scored the majority of his knockout victories. Midway through the round, Overeem threw a well-timed left hand that dropped the champ and followed it up with a guillotine attempt that Miocic was able to break away from.

Miocic was still wobbly when he got up and was unable to dodge the former K-1 Grand Prix World Champion’s left kicks to the body. Miocic slowly began recovering and landed hard right hands of his own before catching an oblique kick by Overeem and bringing the fight to the ground. Miocic ended up in Overeem’s guard where he was able to land heavy shots from the top knocking out Overeem cold.

After the fight, Stipe got his hometown crowd riled up with some chants before speaking to Joe Rogan for his post-fight interview. “He’s a tough guy. He’s a veteran who’s fought the best in the world. I told you, I’m gonna keep this belt for a long time,” he said when asked about his thoughts on the fight.

Miocic extended his current win streak to four straight which consists of all knockouts, three in the first round.
