UFC 202 Results: Conor McGregor beats Nate Diaz via majority decision

Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor headlined UFC 202 in a rematch of their first encounter at UFC 196. McGregor won the bout via majority decision (48-47, 47-47, 48-47).

The first round saw McGregor take a much more calculated approach to the fight than the first time around. He opened up with several leg kicks against Diaz, who has shown vulnerability to them in past bouts. Diaz attempted to check them and throw back but with not much avail. McGregor began landing clean left hands over Diaz’s jab and scored a knockdown before the closing of the round.

The second round was similar to the first; McGregor continued his onslaught of leg kicks and counter left hands, dropping Diaz twice before the momentum started shifting. The featherweight champion’s pace slowed down and Diaz, who was clearly aware of it, began pressing forward and teeing off on McGregor against the fence.

Diaz continued landing at will in the third round and McGregor found himself in a spot similar to the end of their first fight. Diaz initiated several clinches and was landing at a high volume, tiring out the already exhausted McGregor. Despite almost getting put away, McGregor was able to defend Diaz’s takedown attempts and survive the rest of the round.

McGregor seemed to recover well in the following corner break and got back on track with his leg kicks and left hands over Diaz’s jab. The fourth round was closer than the previous rounds but McGregor got the better of the striking exchanges, pot-shotting from the outside while Diaz landed short shots in the clinch. The two went back and forth until the end of the round.

Most of the fifth round took place in the clinch against the fence where Diaz continued landing short, hard punches in high volume in addition to body attacks. McGregor replied with stiff counters and occasional elbows before being tripped to the ground where the fight ended.

Two judges scored the bout 48-47 in favor of McGregor and one judge scored it an even 47-47, awarding Diaz a 10-8 round in the third. Both fighters were in favor of a trilogy bout after putting on an all-time classic. “All I know is it's 1-1. Regroup—we'll do it again, this time at 155 pounds. I came up to 170, faced the bigger man and overcame my adversity,” said McGregor post-fight. “Now you want this trilogy, it happens on my terms. Come back down to 155, we'll do it.”

“I thought I won that fight. They can't have a motherf*cker like me winning. I'm too real for this sport. They're going to get me out when they can, but it's all good, though,” said Diaz in his octagon interview. “I gave him number two the second day, so I'm ready to go again. F*ck that.”

"Good job today, Conor, but we going for three," Diaz continued. "For real."
