UFC 197 is official. The card is headlined by a lightweight title fight between Rafael Dos Anjos and Conor McGregor as well as a bantamweight title fight between Holly Holm and Miesha Tate.
The biggest news among the MMA community in the past few days has been the unofficial announcement of UFC 197. The news was confirmed on UFC.com last night.
It did not take long for the brash Irishman to fire shots at the lightweight champ. In a Facebook post, McGregor called Dos Anjos a “traitor” and vowed to “behead the ‘American Gringo’”:
Dos Anjos’ camp responded to McGregor’s comments with an Instagram post that was later deleted.
The verbal jabs between McGregor and Dos Anjos stem from last September at the ‘Go Big’ press conference held by the UFC. At the conference, McGregor held nothing back against the Brazilian, dropping his infamous 'red panty' line, “I’ll change your bum life. When you sign to fight me, it’s a celebration. You ring back home, you ring your wife – baby, we’ve done it. We’re rich, baby. Conor McGregor made us rich. Break out the red panties.”
McGregor’s coach, John Kavanagh, also called Dos Anjos a ‘warmup fight’ and predicts a first round finish for the featherweight champion.
Both fighters are coming off of quick knockout victories. McGregor won the featherweight title in December with a historic 13-second knockout of reigning champion Jose Aldo. Dos Anjos is recently made his first title defense with a 66 second knockout over #1 contender Donald Cerrone.
UFC 197 will take place on March 5 in Las Vegas.
