UFC 197: McGregor vs RDA, Holm vs Tate

UFC 197 is the biggest card of 2016 so far and will feature two high-profile title fights.

UFC lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos will defend his belt against current featherweight champion Conor McGregor in a highly anticipated superfight. On the same card, UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm will make her first title defense against #2 ranked contender Miesha Tate.

The UFC has not officially confirmed either fight. The first report to come out on the Dos Anjos/McGregor matchup was from a Brazilian media outlet called Lance. The first news of Holm’s title defense against Miesha Tate was broken by Jeremy Botter of Bleacher Report. UFC 197 was originally scheduled to take place in Rio de Janeiro, with rumors emerging that the event would be moved to another location.

Rafael Dos Anjos (25-7) is coming off of his first successful title defense, a TKO victory over Donald Cerrone that lasted only 66 seconds. Dos Anjos shocked the world last March at UFC 185 where he dominated then-champ Anthony Pettis over the course of 5 rounds en route to a unanimous decision victory to win the lightweight title.

Conor McGregor (19-2) won the featherweight belt in December when he knocked out Jose Aldo in a record-breaking 13 seconds. McGregor was signed by the UFC in 2013 where he won 7 straight fights with 6 of them coming by way of knockout. After his latest victory, ‘The Notorious’ expressed his desire to move up a weight class to become a two-division world champion. There was a lot of speculation as to who McGregor’s next opponent would be due to the variety of plausible options available including a rematch with Aldo, a title defense against Frankie Edgar, or even a bout with Nate Diaz. With no obvious #1 contender at lightweight, a shot at the title seems to make the most sense.

Holly Holm (10-0) last fought in November when she made history by knocking out Ronda Rousey, despite being a massive underdog. The former world champion boxer won her first two fights in the UFC in non-spectacular fashion, giving the impression to many fans that she was not a threat to Rousey. Holm's camp said that she intentionally 'held back' in her first fights. Following Holm’s shocking victory, Dana White had originally planned to give Rousey an immediate rematch at UFC 200 in July but changed his decision.

Miesha Tate (17-5), who is currently riding a 4-fight win streak, was promised a third crack at Rousey after her unanimous decision victory over Jessica Eye in July. The former Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion had already lost to Rousey twice but was dissapointed when news broke that Holly Holm would be awarded a title shot at UFC 193 instead. After Holm’s victory over Rousey, news of an immediate rematch left Tate hopeless for getting a chance at UFC gold in the near future. Plans changed, however, and Holm will defend her title against Miesha Tate.

UFC 197 will take place on March 5 in Las Vegas.
