It looks like the long-awaited bout between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson has finally been booked.
Ferguson revealed in a tweet on Tuesday that he was tested by USADA for an upcoming bout against Nurmagomedov at UFC 209. Nurmagomedov also announced on social media that he was scheduled for a bout against an unnamed opponent at UFC 209.
The only obstacle to making the matchup happen prior to this was that Ferguson demanded the same pay as Nurmagomedov, a request that the UFC had refused. However, MMAJunkie has confirmed with a member of Ferguson’s camp that a contract with new terms has been verbally agreed upon and will be signed as soon as it is ready.
Nurmagomedov (24-0) is coming off of a dominant, third-round submission victory over Michael Johnson at UFC 205 in November, making him 8-0 in the UFC with four finishes. Ferguson (22-3), meanwhile, currently rides a nine-fight win streak which includes wins over former champion Rafael Dos Anjos, Edson Barboza, and Josh Thomson.
The winner of this fight will very likely get the next shot at lightweight champion Conor McGregor.
UFC 209 takes place on March 4 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. A welterweight title fight between champion Tyron Woodley and challenger Stephen Thompson is official for the card.
