Two former UFC stars will be squaring off in the main event of Bellator 170.
News broke on Tuesday evening that recently signed Chael Sonnen and former UFC light-heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz will headline at The Forum in Los Angeles on January 21. Shortly after announcing his coming out of retirement, Sonnen made it clear that he had his eye on Ortiz, who also expressed interest in the fight, and Bellator responded by making it happen.
Sonnen’s (29-14-1) last fight was a TKO loss to Rashad Evans in 2013. He was then scheduled to face long-time rival Wanderlei Silva but then tested positive for four banned substances which ultimately led to his retirement from the sport. One of the highlights of his UFC career was in 2010 when he was just two minutes away from defeating all-time great Anderson Silva before getting caught in a submission. He also fought Jon Jones for the light-heavyweight title but lost by TKO in the first round. He holds wins over “Shogun” Rua, current champion Michael Bisping, and Brian Stann.
Ortiz (18-12-1) is coming off of a first-round submission loss to Bellator light-heavyweight champion Liam McGeary at Bellator 142. He earned his shot at the belt with back-to-back wins over Alexander Shlemenko and Stephan Bonnar.
So far, no other fights on the card have been announced.
