The UFC has signed promotional newcomer Sean Santella to face Wilson Reis at UFC 201.
Reis was originally expected to challenge Demetrious Johnson for the 125-pound title in the co-main event of the card but an injury forced the flyweight champion out of the bout. Reis will remain on the card, the UFC announced during the Fight Night: Sioux Falls broadcast on Wednesday, and will face Sean Santella in a three-round, non-title fight.
Reis (20-6), who is currently ranked #8 on the official UFC flyweight rankings, is coming off of a unanimous decision win over Dustin Ortiz at UFC on FOX 18. The 31-year old Brazilian made a successful UFC debut against Ivan Menjivar at bantamweight in 2013 and has gone 4-2 in the promotion since. He made the drop to 125 pounds in 2014 and scored victories over Joby Sanchez and Scott Jorgensen.
Sean Santella (15-5), dubbed “Shorty Rock”, has spent the significant part of his professional career fighting under the CFFC banner where he has gone 6-2. More recently, he is coming off of back-to-back wins against Jay Pressley, who he submitted in the first round, and Andrew Cseh, who he beat via unanimous decision.
UFC 201 is set to take place at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia on July 30 and will be headlined by a welterweight title fight between Robbie Lawler and Tyron Woodley.
