Top welterweight contenders Rory MacDonald and Stephen Thompson are expected to clash in the main event of UFC Fight Night 89.
The bout was announced as the headliner of the UFC’s first event in Ottawa at the UFC Unstoppable press conference last week. No other fights on the card have been announced yet.
Rory MacDonald (18-3) has not fought since last summer in his epic Fight of the Year bout against current welterweight champion Robbie Lawler. Prior to that, the current #1 ranked contender had won three fights in a row against Demian Maia, Tyron Woodley, and Tarec Saffiedine. MacDonald’s only recent loss also came against the current champion when he dropped a split-decision at UFC 167.
Stephen Thompson (12-1) has gone on a tear in the welterweight division, beating six fighters in a row with four knockouts. Thompson’s gained a lot of attention last July after knocking out Jake Ellenberger with a spinning hook kick in the first round. Most recently, ‘Wonderboy’ knocked out former welterweight champion Johny Hendricks inside the first round, moving him up to #2 in the official UFC welterweight rankings.
No other bouts yet have been announced for UFC Fight Night 89.
