Ronda Rousey undergoes knee surgery, return delayed to end of 2016

UFC president Dana White appeared on ESPN’s SportsCenter on Thursday and gave some updates on Ronda Rousey’s current situation and a timeline for her possible return.

Rousey (12-1) has been on the sidelines ever since her shocking upset loss to Holly Holm last year in November. The former bantamweight champion, who has been occupied with acting roles and TV-related endeavors, was speculated to return at UFC 205, the promotion’s first ever event at Madison Square Garden in NYC. A minor knee surgery, however, has spoiled those plans.

“I’m hoping we’re going to get Ronda back this year,” Dana White told ESPN's Cari Champion. “She actually just had surgery yesterday on her knee. Nothing serious, just get in there, scope it and clean it out a little bit. She feels great, her spirits are great, and she’s been training. So if she fights, I’m hoping that she either fights in December. Or if not, she’d probably fight on the New Year’s show or beginning of the year or something”

UFC 205 will be held in November later this year meaning that Rousey won’t recover in time to fight. This also means that she will have been out of competition for over a year when she does return despite being one of the more active champions earlier in her career. The question of who Rousey will face in her comeback came up and White guaranteed that she’d have an immediate shot at whoever holds the belt.

“If Miesha Tate is still the champion, she’ll fight Miesha Tate,” he said. “Whoever has the belt is who Ronda Rousey will fight. You never know; injuries happen in this sport, and maybe somebody falls out and someone goes in. I’m not even saying Holly Holm couldn’t be the champion by the time Ronda comes back.”
