Rizin FF NYE Event Preview

RIZIN Fighting Federation (RFF) is a new Japanese MMA promotion founded by former president of Pride FC, Nobuyuki Sakakibara.

The company’s debut event consists of two separate days of fights, featuring an 8-man heavyweight tournament as well as the return of Fedor Emelianenko. The entire event takes place at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

The first day of fights took place yesterday. In the main event, Shinya Aoki was victorious over MMA legend Kazushi Sakuraba in a one-sided TKO victory. As for the heavyweight tournament, Muhammed ‘King Mo’ Lawal, Jiri Prochazka, Vadim Nemkov, and Teodoras Aukstuolis all came out with first-round knockout wins.

Tomorrow’s event will be headlined by all-time great Fedor Emelianenko (34-4, 1 NC) in his return against kickboxing veteran Singh Jaideep (2-0 MMA/ 40-10, 1 NC Kickboxing).

In July, ‘The Last Emperor’ announced that he would be coming out of retirement to fight on New Year’s Eve after a three year hiatus. Fedor’s time in Strikeforce came to an end following three losses in a row to Fabrício Werdum, Antonio Silva, and Dan Henderson. He continued his career fighting in Russia and Japan, winning three fights in a row. His last fight was a knockout victory over UFC veteran Pedro Rizzo in June of 2012.

The 6-foot-5 Indian, Singh Jaideep, has over 50 kickboxing bouts under his belt. The 28-year old spent most of his kickboxing career in Japan until he transitioned to MMA in 2013. With a 2-0 MMA record, however, many people believe Jaideep is not yet ready for the daunting task ahead of him in Fedor Emelianenko.

In the semi-finals of the heavyweight tournament, ‘King Mo’ is matched up against Aukstuolis while Prochazka will take on Nemkov. The tournament final will take place the same night.

The event airs on New Year’s Eve at 10:00 AM EST on Spike TV.
