It was announced Thursday night that UFC newcomer Darrell Horcher will replace Tony Ferguson as Khabib Nurmagomedov’s opponent at UFC on FOX 19.
A couple days ago, Ferguson withdrew from his main event bout against Nurmagomedov, which was expected to take place on April 16. Ferguson suffered from an injury that leaked blood and other fluid into his lungs, a condition the doctor said could be terminal if he did not take time off.
Donald Cerrone, who is already scheduled to face Patrick Cote in June, offered to step up and face Nurmagomedov on short notice but the bout did not get put together. The original co-headliner, a bout between Rashad Evans and Glover Teixeira, was elevated to a five-round main event.
Pennsylvania-based fighter Darrell Horcher (13-1) got the call to make his UFC debut against the #2 ranked Dagestani. Interestingly enough, Horcher posted a tweet in March directed to Dana White saying that he is ready to “fight anyone anytime any notice.” The CFFC lightweight champion also has three fights in Bellator. He currently rides a five-fight win streak which includes two knockouts.
Nurmagomedov (22-0) has not fought in nearly two years. His last win was a dominant unanimous-decision victory over the current lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos, who offered to defend his title against Nurmagomedov at UFC 200.
