Emanuel Newton and Linton Vassell will have a rematch of their past title fight in the upcoming Bellator 149.
Linton Vassell has had an up and down run of fights. A nine fight win streak led him into a title fight with then-champ Emanuel Newton. But five rounds and a bell soon to come in, Vassell made a mistake and got caught in a rear-naked choke. A solid win against Sokoudjou and Vassell once again found himself in the mix during the Bellator “Dynamite” card. A tough draw against King Mo saw him with his second loss in three fights. But redemption is born of opportunity and Bellator 149 gives him the rematch that started his skid with the dethroned and tumbling Emanuel Newton.
Emanuel Newton is on a two fight slide, having dropped to Liam McGeary and Phil Davis in his two bouts of 2015. While this may mark a decline for many fighters, an entire year of losses is never positive, both fights for Newton carried heavy stakes and tough opponents. Newton’s loss to McGeary was after five rounds and only came by decision (giving McGeary the Light Heavyweight belt). And the Phil Davis fight was a hard matchup in a unique circumstance. Part of the Light Heavyweight tournament featured during the Bellator “Dynamite” mashup card with Glory Kickboxing, Davis was coming furiously off of dissolved negotiations with the UFC. In any event, this is Newton’s chance to cement another run at the title. And with a prior win over Vassell on the highest stage in Bellator, Emanuel Newton will come out firing on all cylinders.
Bellator 149 is headlined by Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie. It will take place February 19th in Houston Texas.
