Miesha Tate vs Amanda Nunes elevated to UFC 200 main event

UFC 200 will now be headlined by the bantamweight title fight between Miesha Tate and Amanda Nunes.

Following Jon Jones’ withdrawal from his main event bout against Daniel Cormier, it was announced that Brock Lesnar and Mark Hunt would instead headline the card but the UFC has changed its decision. UFC president Dana White announced the news at the UFC 200 Anderson Silva press conference where he spoke about the reasoning behind making the change.

“Miesha is the woman who beat the woman who beat the woman. She’s the champ. I mean, what Miesha accomplished a few fights ago you can’t disrespect that, she should be the main event,” said White. “She deserves to be. The other title fight is an interim title fight. Miesha Tate deserves to be the main event, it’s the right thing to do.”

Tate (18-5) currently rides a five fight win streak and is coming off of a monumental victory over former champion Holly Holm to win the bantamweight title. Her upcoming fight this weekend against Amanda Nunes (12-4) will be her first ever title defense. Nunes, on the other hand, is coming off of a unanimous decision victory over Valentina Shevchenko which is the second time she has ever gone the distance in her professional career. “The Lioness” is 5-1 in the UFC with her only loss coming at the hands of Cat Zingano two years ago.

UFC 200 is set to take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on July 9 and is expected to be the biggest card in UFC history.
