Lyoto Machida admits to use of banned substance, bout with Henderson scrapped

The co-main event of UFC on FOX 19 has been cancelled.

The UFC announced Wednesday that Lyoto Machida declared the use of a supplement containing 7-keto-DHEA, a substance banned for athletes by USADA both in and out of competition. Machida claimed he did not know that the substance was banned but took full responsibility for the situation. As a result, the UFC removed his co-headliner bout with Dan Henderson from the card which takes place this Saturday.

A strawweight bout between Rose Namajunas and Tecia Torres has been elevated to the co-main event. Bouts between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Darrell Horcher as well as Cub Swanson and Hacran Dias complete the main card with Rashad Evans vs Glover Teixeira in the headliner slot.

7-keto-DHEA is legally sold as a dietary supplement in the US although it is listed as an anabolic agent by WADA. In a statement released by the UFC, which can be read below, USADA said that it will take Machida’s disclosure of use into consideration when issuing a suspension. Lyoto Machida also released a statement which can be seen on his Instagram page.

Statement by the UFC:

The UFC organization was made aware today by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), the independent administrator of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, that Lyoto Machida declared the usage of a banned substance during an out-of-competition sample collection last week. Machida stated that he was unaware that the substance was prohibited both in and out of competition and, in accordance with the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, his disclosure of usage will be taken into consideration by USADA during any potential results management and adjudication process.

Given this information, UFC officials have elected to remove Machida from his scheduled bout against Dan Henderson this Saturday in Tampa, Fla. Henderson will be re-booked for a new bout in the near future.
