A lightweight bout between #1 ranked lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov and #6 ranked Michael Johnson is set to take place at Madison Square Garden on November 12.
The news came shortly after the announcement of Conor McGregor vs Eddie Alvarez on Tuesday when there were rumors circulating of Nurmagomedov being awarded a title shot. While the bout order of the card hasn’t been finalized, it is likely that the fight will headlined the prelims.
After being sidelined for two years due to recurring knee injuries, Nurmagomedov (23-0) made his comeback against then-newcomer Darrell Horcher at UFC on FOX 19 where he won a second-round TKO. He was originally booked to face Tony Ferguson but an injury forced Ferguson off the card. Prior to that, the Dagestani beat former UFC lightweight champ Rafael Dos Anjos by unanimous decision at UFC on FOX 11. He is 7-0 in the UFC with three finishes.
Johnson (17-10), meanwhile, is coming off of a recent first-round KO victory over Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFN 94. The victory got him back in the win column after he suffered back-to-back losses Nate Diaz and Beneil Dariush. Before the losses, he was on a four-fight win streak.
UFC 205 will be headlined by a lightweight title fight between Conor McGregor and Eddie Alvarez. The card also features title fights between Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson as well as Joanna Jędrzejczyk and Karolina Kowalkiewicz.
