Holly Holm will Fight Before Rousey Rematch

Holly Holm’s highly anticipated first title defense will not be a rematch against Ronda Rousey, as many had expected.

The current UFC women's bantamweight champion won the title last November in a historic knockout victory over Ronda Rousey at UFC 193.

“Holly Holm will fight before she fights Ronda,” announced UFC president Dana White on last night’s episode of UFC Tonight. White had initially said that an immediate rematch was the obvious fight to make, likely targeted for UFC 200 in July. This caused some confusion with the Holly Holm camp who thought that waiting until July for a rematch was not a good idea, as an eight-month layoff is quite long for an active fighter like Holm.

Many believe that the most deserving of a title shot against Holm is #2-ranked contender Miesha Tate. Tate, who is currently riding a 4-fight win streak, was promised a third crack at Ronda Rousey after her unanimous decision victory over Jessica Eye in July. The former Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion had already lost to Rousey twice but was disappointed when news broke that Holly Holm would be awarded a title shot at UFC 193 instead.

While it hasn’t been officially confirmed that Miesha Tate will be Holly Holm’s next opponent, it seems to be the only plausible scenario in the eyes of many fans.
