GSP in talks with UFC, wants to run a ‘tryout’ training camp

Georges St. Pierre and his management team are currently under contract negotiations for a possible return by the all-time great.

GSP recently appeared on The MMA Hour hosted by MMAFighting’s Ariel Helwani to discuss his future plans and a potential return to competition. St. Pierre spoke about his decision-making process and the current state of his negotiations with the UFC.

GSP, who is 34 years old and has not fought since his controversial split-decision victory against Johnny Hendricks in 2013, says he needs to run a trial training camp to know whether or not he’s ready to make a comeback.

“I think I'm doing well and I haven't been active in a long time in the Octagon. You can be in the gym, but the Octagon is a different thing. I need to make sure if I do this, I need to do my tryout first, push myself to see if my body and I really want to do this again, go through that training camp,” said St. Pierre.

“I don't want to do it and in the middle of my real training camp, be like, 'Oh, I don't feel comfortable doing this.' And then I mess up everything and I come back and make a fool of myself.”

After months of rumors and speculations about just how likely it is for the former welterweight champion to compete again, the air was cleared when St. Pierre discussed his position with the UFC and what stage they’re at in terms of negotiations. It seems that the Reebok deal is the hold up and would cost GSP a lot of sponsorship money, if he were to return.

"It changed a lot of things in my contract," St. Pierre said of the Reebok deal, which took effect in July 2015. "We need to renegotiate maybe a new contract. I'm not allowed to wear my sponsors anymore, and I lose money. It depends how it's gonna go down with the UFC. We'll see what's gonna happen."

GSP, who has sponsorship deals with the likes of Under Armor and Gatorade, has been critical of the Reebok deal before, saying that it could be a deal-breaker.
