Gilbert Melendez vs Edson Barboza scheduled for UFC on FOX 20

An intriguing bout between lightweight elite Edson Barboza and Gilbert Melenedez is the latest addition to UFC on FOX 20.

Melendez (22-5) was originally scheduled to face Al Iaquinta at UFC Fight Night 71 but was pulled from the bout after failing a PED test and was subsequently suspended for a year. After an unsuccessful title fight against Anthony Pettis, he lost a close split-decision to Eddie Alvarez at UFC 188 in Mexico, dropping his UFC record to 1-3.

Edson Barboza (17-4) will be making a quick return after his impressive unanimous decision victory in what was almost entirely a stand-up battle against Anthony Pettis. Prior to that, Barboza accepted a short-notice bout, filling in for Khabib Nurmagomedov, against #3 ranked Tony Ferguson. After a close first round, Barboza got caught in Ferguson’s signature d’arce choke and was forced to tap.

The event will take place on July 23 at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. The main event for the card has not yet been announced but a potential bout between former champion Holly Holm and Valentina Shevchenko is in the works.
