Garbrandt wants Caraway next at UFC 203

Cody Garbrandt might just be the next big thing at bantamweight.

The 24-year old Ohio native is coming off of the biggest win of his career against Thomas Almeida this past weekend. Almeida (21-1) was one of the UFC’s most promising undefeated up-and-comers with an impressive resume that consisted of 21 wins with 19 coming by way stoppage. Garbrandt (9-0) brought the hype train to a halt when he knocked out Almeida in the opening round of their main event bout at UFC Fight Night 88.

After the fight, Garbrandt expressed his interest in fighting at UFC 203 which will be held in his home-state of Ohio in September. When asked about a possible opponent, Garbrandt entertained the idea of a bout against #4 ranked Bryan Caraway, who also fought on the card.

“Going into the fight with Thomas Almeida, Aljamain Sterling and Bryan Caraway were match up, too. And they were talking about the winners facing each other. And I have no doubt in my mind that if Aljamain had won, we'd be fighting,” Garbrandt said. “Bryan won, so why shouldn't I be fighting Bryan for the next in line for a title shot or that ranking up there. I think I just got ranked fifth, he's fourth. So let's fight on September 10.

“I've seen him do some bantering in the media about how I do not deserve to be ahead of him. But my win was dominant with no questions. You had a close fight with Aljamain and I went in there and destroyed my adversary in under three minutes who was looked at as untouchable and unbeatable.”

Bryan Caraway won a close split-decision over rising star Aljamain Sterling that night making him 4-1 in his last five appearances. While Caraway was impressed with Garbrandt’s victory, he believes he is still ahead of Garbrandt in line for a title shot.

“Garbrandt wasn't even ranked before,” Caraway said. “I'm not saying he isn't an amazing, amazing fighter, but he wasn't ranked, so for him to leapfrog above me would be ludicrous. I think I'm the highest ranked guy now that hasn't fought for the belt.”

While no official announcements have been made, the potential matchup seems plausible in the eyes of most fans.
