Ferguson calls for bout against Alvarez or Nurmagomedov following FON win

Following his Fight of the Night win in Sioux Falls Wednesday night, Tony Ferguson believes he’s ready for a shot at the lightweight title.

“El Cucuy” faced undefeated UFC newcomer Landon Vannata at UFC Fight Night 91 last night and won the bout with his signature D’Arce choke in the second round. Ferguson, who entered the fight a heavy -675 favorite, was dropped and nearly finished by Vannata in the first round but managed to pull through with the victory. He was originally expected to face Michael Chiesa in the main event but Chiesa withdrew due to an injury and was replaced by Vannata on short notice.

At the post-fight press conference, the #3 ranked lightweight admitted that he did underestimate the newcomer but believes the win is still worthy of putting him in title contention. Ferguson extended his win streak to eight straight with the last four wins all earning at least one post-fight bonus.

"We were preparing for Michael Chiesa, so, I think if anything, I was just more prepared for a wrestler and I underestimated [Vannata’s] standup,” Ferguson said. “After just getting hit a couple of times, it's exactly what I wanted and that's just the type of fighter I am, and I battled through it, and took some of his hardest shots, and put fear in his face."

Ferguson was expected to face Khabib Nurmagomedov in what was possibly a #1 contender bout in April at UFC on FOX 19 but had to withdraw after suffering from a lung condition. While he is still interested in that matchup, he believes he has a better chance at fighting for the title.

“I know he wasn't ranked, but it was a very risky chance to come in there and take the short-notice fight. Props to Lando Vannata and props to JacksonWink over in Albuquerque, but every single fight is there and I'm ready for it,” he said. “If Eddie Alvarez wants to sign that dotted line, or if he wants an easy fight, go ahead and fight Conor, but I'm a hard type fight. I'm not someone to joke around with. And with [Rafael dos Anjos], you have Khabib Nurmagomedov. I'd love to get that fight against Khabib and maybe we'll go on The Ultimate Fighter show and put on a show for the fans."

Nurmagomedov is coming off of a win over newcomer Darrell Horcher at UFC on FOX 19 in April in what was his return to competition after a two-year layoff. Rafael Dos Anjos, on the other hand, recently lost his lightweight title to Eddie Alvarez at UFC Fight Night 90 last week.
