Dos Anjos to defend lightweight title against Alvarez on FightPass

Rafael Dos Anjos is scheduled to defend his title against #1 contender Eddie Alvarez in July.

The UFC announced the bout Friday morning which is set to headline UFC Fight Night 90 on July 7. The event will be the first of three during International Fight Week and will occur two days before UFC 200. The next day will feature the finale of The Ultimate Fighter 23 headlined by a title fight between Claudia Gadelha and strawweight champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk. This all builds up to the UFC 200 super-card which takes place on July 9 and will be headlined by a rematch between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz.

The entire card will air exclusively on UFC Fight Pass making the headliner bout the second title fight ever to be featured on the UFC’s official live stream.

Dos Anjos (25-7) was originally expected to headline UFC 196 against featherweight champion Conor McGregor but was forced to withdraw from the bout only 11 days out after suffering a broken foot. The lightweight champ has won five straight fights over some of the best of the division. Most recently, he knocked out Donald Cerrone in just 66 seconds at UFC on FOX 17 in December.

Eddie Alvarez (27-4) has gone 2-1 since entering the UFC in 2014 in his much anticipated debut against Donald Cerrone. Alvarez lost his debut via unanimous decision but was able to bounce back by scoring a split-decision over former #1 contender Gilbert Melendez. In his last fight, Alvarez faced former champion Anthony Pettis in a lackluster bout but managed to come out with the split-decision victory to earn his shot at the belt.
