Donald Cerrone vs Kelvin Gastelum targeted for UFC 205

Donald Cerrone will likely face Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 205, according to a report by MMAFighting.com.

Cerrone was originally expected to face former welterweight champion Robbie Lawler in what many fans anticipated to be one of the most exciting matchups of the year but Lawler, unfortunately, had to pull out of the bout. Gastelum, meanwhile, was already lined up for a fight against Jorge Masvidal at UFN 98 in Mexico City but it looks like another opponent will face Masvidal instead.

“Cowboy” (31-7, 1 NC) has been on a tear ever since moving up to welterweight following his loss to now former UFC lightweight champ Rafael Dos Anjos in December last year. He most recently faced Rick Story at UFC 202 and won the bout via TKO in the second round. Prior to that, he knocked out Patrick Cote in the third round.

Coming off of the biggest win of his career is Gastelum (12-2) who beat former welterweight champion Johny Hendricks at UFC 200 by unanimous decision. Before that, he suffered a split-decision loss to #8 ranked Neil Magny.

UFC 205 will be the promotion’s long-awaited debut at Madison Square Garden in NYC. The event will take place on November 12 but does not yet have a main event in place.
