Demian Maia will have one more hurdle to clear before getting a shot at the welterweight title.
The UFC announced on Tuesday that Maia will be facing #6 ranked welterweight Jorge Masvidal at UFC 211 in May.
Maia (24-6) is on a six-fight win streak which includes three submission wins over ranked welterweight contenders. His most recent victory is a sub two-minute rear-naked choke win over former interim champion Carlos Condit in August. Prior to that, he submitted Matt Brown with a rear-naked choke at UFC 198.
Masvidal (32-11) is coming off of a second-round knockout win over Donald Cerrone in what is arguably the biggest of his career. Prior to that, he beat Jake Ellenberger by first-round TKO and Ross Pearson by unanimous decision. He has gone 4-2 since moving back up to welterweight in 2015.
UFC 211 takes place on May 13 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas and will be headlined by a heavyweight title fight between champion Stipe Miocic and challenger Junior Dos Santos. The co-main event will feature Joanna Jedrzejczyk’s fifth defense of her strawweight title against Jessica Andrade.
