Nate Diaz’s popularity increased exponentially following his submission victory over featherweight champion Conor McGregor.
Following Diaz’s massive upset win at UFC 196, Dana White appeared on ESPN SportsCenter to discuss potential matchups for the new superstar. Apparently, a shot at the welterweight title against Robbie Lawler was not out of the question.
“You know what would make a lot of sense? This isn’t the fight I’m making, I’m just saying him and Robbie would make a lot of sense. His brother beat Robbie,” Dana White said. “Robbie is now the world champion, and Nate became very, very popular tonight. We’ll see what happens with Nate.”
Nate Diaz’s brother, Nick, is the only fighter to have ever finished current welterweight champion Robbie Lawler via knockout. The fight happened over ten years ago, however, at UFC 47.
Diaz (19-10) is now 3-1 in his last four bouts, with his only loss coming at the hands of current lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos via unanimous decision. Prior to his win over McGregor, Diaz impressed at UFC on FOX 17 where he beat #6 ranked Michael Johnson via unanimous decision.
