Dana White says Cerrone vs Lawler official for UFC 205

After weeks of rumors, it looks like Donald Cerrone vs Robbie Lawler will be happening at Madison Square Garden after all.

Anthony Lima of CBS Cleveland spoke to UFC president Dana White on Wednesday morning and was told that the matchup is official for UFC 205. The only other fight on the card that has been announced is Thiago Alves’ lightweight debut against #13 ranked Al Iaquinta.

Cerrone (31-7, 1 NC) moved up to welterweight following his TKO loss to Rafael Dos Anjos in their lightweight title fight last year. He has gone 3-0 with all finishes since making the move and has earned a Performance of the Night bonus for each victory. Most recently, he faced Rick Story at UFC 202 as an underdog and become the first man to ever TKO the long-time UFC vet. Before that, he knocked out Patrick Cote at UFC Fight Night 89, making him the first man to do so as well. He is 11-1 in his last 12 fights.

Coming off of the recent loss of his welterweight title is Lawler (27-11, 1 NC) who was knocked out by Tyron Woodley in the first round of their headlining bout at UFC 201. The defeat broke the former welterweight champion’s five-fight win streak which included two title defenses and three Fight of the Night bonuses. His last win was a split-decision over Carlos Condit at UFC 195.

UFC 205 takes place on November 12 and will be the UFC’s first ever event at Madison Square Garden in New York City. So far, no headlining bout has been announced for the card.
