CM Punk debut set for UFC 203 in September

CM Punk’s MMA debut against Mickey Gall is official for UFC 203 in September.

The former WWE star broke the news Thursday morning on the new UFC Unfiltered podcast hosted by former welterweight champion Matt Serra and comedian Jim Norton. Punk, whose real name is Phil Brooks, signed with the UFC in December of 2014 and began his training under Duke Roufus a month later. In October 2015, he suffered a shoulder injury which delayed his debut until the summer and then suffered a herniated disc in February which pushed it further back to September.

Mickey Gall (2-0) made his professional debut last November where he was featured on the UFC’s YouTube web series Lookin’ for a Fight. Gall made quick work of his opponent, ending the fight with a rear-naked choke in the first round, and called out CM Punk in his post-fight interview, grabbing the attention of Dana White. Gall was then signed by the UFC and promised a shot at CM Punk if he were to get past Mike Jackson at UFC Fight Night 82, which he did with a submission just 45 seconds into the fight.

UFC 203 will take place at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio on September 10. The card will be headlined by Ohio’s own Stipe Miocic who will defend his heavyweight title against #3 ranked Alistair Overeem in addition to a co-main event bout between Fabricio Werdum and Ben Rothwell. The matchup between Punk and Gall, which takes place at welterweight, will also be featured on the main card.
