CM Punk banks 500k for MMA debut

CM Punk was paid $500,000 for his performance at UFC 203 last Saturday, which has sparked a lot of controversy among members of the MMA community.

Punk, who is now 0-1 as a professional mixed martial artist, made his debut against a 2-0 Mickey Gall on the main card of UFC 203 last weekend. As expected by many, Gall had no trouble in ending the fight early by taking Punk down and following up with heavy ground and pound before sinking in a rear-naked choke.

The former WWE superstar decided to give MMA shot in 2014 and signed with the UFC in December that year, which upset many pro fighters since Punk had no prior martial arts experience. A month later, he began his training under Duke Roufus, the head coach of fighters like Anthony Pettis and Tyron Woodley, in Milwaukee. After a year-and-a-half of training, he was finally ready for his debut.

When UFC 203 salaries were disclosed by the Ohio Athletic Commission, many fighters took to social media to express their opinions on Punk’s controversial $500,000 payday, some of them complaining about the unfair pay and others making jokes about it.

While Punk did cash out, he certainly wasn’t the highest paid. UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic made $600,000 for his first-round knockout of Alistair Overeem, who made $800,000 himself. The rest of the UFC 203 payouts can be seen below:

Main Card

Stipe Miocic ($600,000) def. Alistair Overeem ($800,000)

Fabricio Werdum ($375,000) def. Travis Browne ($120,000)

Mickey Gall ($30,000) def. CM Punk ($500,000)

Jimmie Rivera ($48,000) def. Urijah Faber ($160,000)

Jessica Andrade ($46,000) def.
