Claudia Gadelha leaves Nova Uniao, opens her own gym

Claudia Gadelha, a long-time Nova Uniao fighter under head coach Andre Pederneiras, has decided to leave the gym and start her own one.

According to a report by Combate, the #1 strawweight contender had a falling out with Pederneiras shortly after her unanimous decision loss to Joanna Jędrzejczyk in July. Gadelha said she wasn’t happy with the way her training camp was handled and doesn’t believe she received the attention she needed to be fully prepared for her championship bout. The comment bothered Pederneiras and instigated an argument between the two resulting in Gadelha's departure from the academy.

Gadelha went on to open her own gym, Claudia Gadelha’s MMA & BJJ Academy, in Pennsylvania. She will run her next training camp, however, at Kimura Nova Uniao in Natal alongside the likes of Renan Barao and Jussier Formiga under head coach Jair Lourenço.

Prior to her defeat to the current strawweight champ, Gadelha beat Jessica Aguilar via unanimous decision. She has gone 2-2 since being signed by the UFC in 2014 with both of her losses being decisions to Jędrzejczyk. Her next bout has not yet been officially scheduled.
