Straw-weight champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk put her title on the line for the fourth time against fellow Polish star Karolina Kowalkiewicz on the main card of UFC 205. Jedrzejczyk retained her belt with a unananomus decision victory (49-46, 49-46, 49-46).
At the opening bell, the women wasted no time in exchanging strikes with the momentum quickly shifting in favor of the champion. Kowalkiewicz attempted to close the distance from both stances but didn’t have much success in landing anything as Jedrzejczyk was able to time her counters well. The rest of the round saw Joanna dominate the stand up and clinches.
The second round continued in the same fashion with Jedrzejczyk landing punches and kicks to the head, body, and legs of the challenger. Kowalkiewicz attempted to tie up Jedrzejczyk a few times to get the fight to the mat but was unsuccessful with her attempts.
Jedrzejczyk remained in control for the rest of the fight, landing an onslaught of punches, kicks, knees and elbows on Kowalkiewicz, who pressed forward for the entire bout. Despite losing a unanimous decision, Kowalkiewicz came close to finishing the fight in the fourth round after she landed a flush right hand on the champion.
“Polish girls are the toughest probably in the world,” said Jedrzejczyk said in her post-fight speech, giving props to her opponent.
