BJ Penn out of UFN 97 headliner against Ricardo Lamas

The UFC’s return to Manila has lost its headlining bout.

Former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion BJ Penn has been forced out of his UFN 97 main event bout against Ricardo Lamas due to an injury suffered in training as per MMAJunkie. So far, the UFC has not officially announced the news. The event takes place in just over ten days.

This is the second time that Penn’s comeback from retirement has been delayed, the first time being when he voluntarily disclosed his use of an IV to USADA back in May. His last appearance in the octagon was his TKO loss to Frankie Edgar in their 2014 trilogy bout.

Lamas (16-5), who does not yet have a replacement opponent, is 1-2 in his last three bouts with the most recent being a decision loss to Max Holloway. Prior to that, he won a unanimous decision against Diego Sanchez and suffered a knockout to Chad Mendes.

UFC Fight Night 97 is set to take place at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Philippines on October 15. The main card will feature Derrick Lewis vs Marcin Tybura as well as Cole Miller vs Mizuto Hirota.
