ONE Championship 28 Preview

ONE Championship is heading to Guangzhou, China for its 28th official outing, an event featuring the promotion’s ongoing featherweight and flyweight tournaments. The tournaments are four-man, one on one style with a reserve bout to produce an alternate in the event of an injury.

Winners of the opening round will have a break before facing each other again later in the card. Marcos Santana, a Brazilian making his pro debut, will be facing Ruel Catalan, a 27 year old from the Philippines. Catalan is 2-5, all of his fights have been finished, and he’s only escaped the first round twice. Santana, a BJJ competitor of 20 years, steps in with a black belt and the skills he’s honed as part of Evolve MMA.

Zorobabel Moreira, a 32 year old Brazilian with a 7-3 win-loss record, faces off against Christian Holley, a 10-1 Englishman fighting out of Newcastle. Holley trains with Atherton Submission Wrestling, and he’s finished an impressive 80% of his fights. His only blemish comes against UFC vet Roger Huerta, a loss he suffered at last summer’s ONE FC 19. Where Holley hell short, Moreira conquered, as he defeated Huerta via a gruesome soccer kick KO at ONE FC 4 back in 2012.

The main event features Russia Top Team member Timofey Nastyukhin against Japanese featherweight Yusuke Kawanago. Nastyukhin lost his debut fight in 2010, but he immediately went on to win his next eight, each by first round KO or submission. He has never had a winning fight last more than four minutes. Kawanago steps in at 13-4 with fights mostly in Pancrase.

For North American audiences, ONE Championship 28 begins at 7AM EST and is available for livestreaming on One FC’s website.
